Pigmentation

What is hyperpigmentation?

Human skin contains melanocyte cells that produce melanin, a chemical that gives skin its color. Too much melanin leads to hyperpigmented skin, common examples of which include freckles and age spots. Hyperpigmentation can result from sun exposure, trauma to the skin or as a side effect of certain drugs.

There are many different reasons or causes of hyperpigmentation.
  • Melasma. This type of hyperpigmentation is caused by hormonal fluctuations, and is a normal occurrence during pregnancy. It can also occur as a result of thyroid dysfunction and as a side effect of taking birth control pills or hormone therapy medication.
  • Lentigines. These are also known as liver spots or age spots. They are found on 90% of people over the age of 60, and are caused but exposure to UV rays (sun exposure).
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This is caused by skin injury such as psoriasis, burns, acne, and some skin care treatments. It usually goes away as the skin regenerates and heals
  • What are laser peels?

As we age, we tend to develop uneven skin tones, sun spots and our cells begin to lose moisture and collagen production is reduced. Peels are treatments used to improve and smooth texture and correct tone of the skin, removing wrinkles, enlarged pores and spots. During a laser peel, the superficial layers of the skin are gently removed to promote regeneration of the skin, resulting in a smoother clearer more youthful appearance.

How does a laser peel work?

Laser peels can remove nearly all fine lines, while significantly improving more dramatic wrinkles. The laser beam gently vaporizes micron-thin layers of the epidermis while thermally affecting deeper skin layers to stimulate the production of new collagen in the dermis.

    Why choose a laser peel?

Laser peels are completely customizable to each individual’s specific need. The practitioner has the ability to completely tailor the treatment, by controlling the depth and region of your treatments.

    Does it hurt?

Depending on your concern and your desired result will determine the sensation of the peel however, the most dramatic sensation will be that of a hot butterfly wing grazing over the skin.

    Post treatment expectations?

Immediately following the treatment, you may experience pinkness and mild edema which could last for a few hours to a few days depending on the customized settings chose.
